Sumitomo Corp. said recently it has set up a pesticide-marketing subsidiary in the Chilean capital Santiago to boost its agrichemical sales in South America's Andes region.
Starting operations on Jan. 1, the wholly owned arm, Summit Agro Chile SpA., deals with such products as pesticides, herbicides and plant growth regulators, the trading house said.
The Chilean pesticide market is estimated at $210 million and half of the agrichemicals there are used for cultivating fruits, many of which are exported to the United States and Europe, it said.
The newly established subsidiary is the third one that Sumitomo has created in South America for pesticide business, following ones in Brazil and Argentina.
