The rules for the registration of new biological pesticides in Brazil should change "until the end of this year", revealed the General Coordinator of Pesticides and Others from the Department of Agriculture (MAPA), Luis Rangel, to the DCI newspaper.
The main criticism the companies that develop this technology point out is that the required standards for biological products is the same one required for chemicals. According to the government, one of the biggest industries’ complaints will be answered: a record of biological products for all crops at once.
The Brazilian authorities "have already accepted the argument that biological products, as long as they don’t leave residue in the plant, can be extended to all cultures, and now we are in the final stage to know if we have a problem from the health point of view," said Rangel.
Pedro Faria, from Biosphere, is pleased with the decision: "For the chemical products, there is residue. But in the case of biological product, there isn’t. It makes no sense to restrict the use of a product that controls soil diseases that affects three different cultures.” The company was founded in 2007 to introduce in Brazil a new concept in preventingfood contamination by aflatoxin in peanuts, the Afla-Guard.
