China’s pesticide adjuvant innovation has progressed significantly over the last 2 years, according to information received by Agropages at the recently held Appraisal Meeting for the Pesticide Adjuvant Innovation Program.

The Pesticide Adjuvant Innovation Program is organized and implemented under the guidance of the Central Research Institute of China Chemical Science and Technology (CRICC), who is a major sponsor of China’s Pesticide Industry Technology Innovation Strategy Alliance; the Program is implemented from January 2011 to June 2015.

The Program targets at innovation for pesticide adjuvant, covering R & D of 7 categories over 15 pesticide varieties of environment-friendly pesticide adjuvants including acrylicpolymer pesticide adjuvant, high-performance lignosulfonate pesticide adjuvant, novel Gemini sulphonate& phosphate ester adjuvant, resin-based pesticide adjuvant, polyamines functional polymer adjuvant and plant-derived spray adjuvant to be used for large-tonnage pesticide formulations. In the meantime the Program will set up a pesticide adjuvant database, as well as to train environment-friendly pesticide adjuvant research teams.

Up until June 2013, a total of 20 pesticide adjuvants with independent intellectual rights have been applied to pesticide production in China, including the application of plant-derived adjuvant to the products of transnational companies like Syngenta and BASF. An application of 1,520 KL of plant-derived spray adjuvant will save some 300,000 tons of water; the application of 2,000 tons of resin-based plant oil solvent will protect 200 million Mu of land from hazardous benzene or methylbenzene solvents. Furthermore 37 corporate adjuvant and formulation standards have been established.

Data have been collected for pesticide adjuvant database. A total of 856 compounds are classified, which include 57 toxic, 51 potentially toxic, 442 unknown toxic, 160 low-risk and 146 special-use adjuvants. A preliminary pesticide database has been established, being divided into 4 portions – Compound Identification, Physiochemical Property, Safety Analysis, Miscellaneous, which is available via information search, classification search, function search and extension search.
