US EPA has recently issued a cancellation order for certain products containing chlorpyrifos. This cancellation order follows the requests by the registrant Dow AgroSciences, LLC made in March, 2005 to voluntarily cancel these product registration. The cancellations were effective on July 3, 2013. (TABLE 1—CHLORPYRIFOS PRODUCT CANCELLATIONS)
According to the cancellation order, the distribution, sale or use of existing stocks will not be lawful under FIFRA with the date of this cancellation order except for the purpose of returns and relabeling, shipping such stocks for export consistent with the requirements of section 17 of FIFRA, or for proper disposal.
Chlorpyrifos is one of the most widely used insecticides in the world. These cancellations were specifically requested by Dow AgroSciences and are for discontinued formulations or state special local need (SLN) registrations that are no longer needed.
“Registrations are still in effect for Lorsban-4E, Lorsban Advanced, Cobalt, Cobalt Advanced, Lorsban 75WG, Lorsban 50W and other widely-used chlorpyrifos crop protection products . Use and availability of those major chlorpyrifos products are unaffected by EPA’s cancellation (at Dow AgroSciences’ request) of these other, discontinued products.” Dow AgroSciences said “The cancellation was initiated by Dow AgroSciences, voluntarily, several years ago, so there should now be little if any volume of these products remaining in the U.S. chain of distribution.” Dow AgroSciences said.”
