An ag tech company says its new light activated non-GMO seed traits have received a funding boost.
Alex Fotsch with BioLumic tells Brownfield xTraits are the world’s first seed traits activated purely by precise light signals.
″A one-time light signal before the seeds ever reach the field. They are non-GMO and naturally program the plant’s own genetic expression to improve things like yield, stand establishment, and nutritional quality depending on the crop and trait outcome.″
He says the company recently secured $8.3 million in oversubscribed funding for the product.
″With these funds, we’re developing a new suite of xTraits for corn, soybeans, rice, and rye grass to bring these traits to farmers and have a meaningful impact on-farm.″
Fotsch says BioLumic’s goal is to capture 10% of the non-transgenic seed trait market within five years. The xTraits are expected to be commercially deployed in the U.S. market for the 2026 planting season.
