Between January and March 2025, the area treated with pesticides on Brazilian farms increased by 1.8% compared to the same period of the previous year, totaling over 831 million hectares.

This data comes from a study commissioned by the National Union of the Plant Protection Products Industry (Sindiveg) and conducted by Kynetec Brasil.

The study indicates that the volume of products applied for pest, disease, and weed control went up by 3.4% in the first quarter. The evaluation utilized the PAT metric (Potential Treated Area or Area Treated per Product), which considers both the number of applications and the number of products present in the tank during management. The crops with the highest representation in the treated area were maize (36%), soybeans (35%), cotton (13%), pastures (7%), sugar cane (3%), horticultural crops (1%), and other crops (5%).

Despite the increase in area and volume, the market experienced a decline in monetary values. Revenue, calculated based on prices paid by farmers, reached US$6.6 billion, a 11.1% decrease compared to $7.4 billion in the same quarter of 2024.

Regionally, market potential during the analyzed period was concentrated in Mato Grosso and Rondônia (37%), followed by the BAMATOPIPA region (Bahia, Maranhão, Tocantins, Piauí, and Pará) with 16%, São Paulo and Minas Gerais with 14%, Paraná with 10%, Mato Grosso do Sul with 8%, Goiás and the Federal District with 8%, Rio Grande do Sul and Santa Catarina with 5%, and other regions with 2%.

In 2024, the area treated with pesticides increased by 12.2% compared to 2023, reaching over 2.5 billion hectares. The first quarter (48%) and the fourth quarter (34%) accounted for the majority of application activities.

In terms of volume, the increase was 13.6%, with herbicides accounting for 45% of the total, fungicides for 23%, insecticides for 22%, seed treatments for 1%, and other categories for 8%.

The total amount paid by farmers was $19.9 billion, representing a 6.6% decrease compared to 2023. The main factors impacting this market reduction were price drops and currency fluctuations due to the depreciation of the real.
