Paraguayan pesticide authorities are raising the intensity of their inspections on pesticide use. The country's plant health and seed quality service, the Senave, seeks to ensure that farmers do not apply pesticides in residential areas nor near water supplies. It has also facilitated exclusive market entry points by air and sea for pesticides, such as the ports of Villeta, Ciudad del Este and Encarnacion. The Senave's director of agrochemicals, Basilicio Santacruz, had expected "confusion among farmers" following the national Parliament's recent rejection of a proposed law on the marketing of pesticides. The service decommissioned packages of unregistered insecticides following raids earlier this month at the national supplies market, the Mercado de Abasto.
