Brazil has re-registered the molluscicide, metaldehyde. The active ingredient has been approved for household and public health use and as a wood preservative. The move follows a request for approval from the Swiss company, Lonza (Basle), an industry source says. The Brazilian national health surveillance agency, the Anvisa, cancelled all metaldehyde registrations in 2006. The registrant, Produtos Quimicos Sao Vicente (Garulhos), had not supplied the necessary data to support its continuing registration. The agency approved the Swiss company's dossier in September last year. The Latin American subsidiary of the French company, De Sangosse (Sao Paulo), has applied for registration of its metaldehyde-based product, Metarex, for use on beans, soybeans, maize and tobacco.
