Brazilian Federal Court has recently rejected the request of the Public Prosecutor to suspend the registration of 2, 4-D-based herbicides.

In this sentence the judge Jamil Rosa pointed out that it is not possible to exclude unexpectedly effective products of high agricultural use from the market. According to experts, the current profits of the Brazilian agriculture are precisely due to the correct application of these ingredients in the crops. The 2, 4-D, for example, has been in Brazil since the late 1960’s and was approved by the Ministry of Agriculture, Anvisa and Ibama, and the alternative products to this active ingredient is not only more expensive, but more toxic.

The lawsuit, filed in March, requires the prohibition of the use of important pesticides applied extensively in Brazilian agriculture, including eight other ingredients: glyphosate, parathion-methyl, lactofen, phorate, carbofuran, abamectin, thiram and paraquat.
