According to the US Department of Agriculture (USDA), cotton consumption has been affected by world economic woes. China is feeling most of the effect, says USDA, accounting for about half of the projected 2.4% reduction in 2008/09world cotton consumption. USDA’s most recent world agricultural supply and demand estimates also forecast reduced cotton consumption in Brazil, India, Pakistan, Thailand, and Turkey, with lower consumption reducing world trade by 1 million bales – including a reduction of 500,000 bales of Chinese imports.

Chinese imports are also projected down due to an increase in world stocks – raised by USDA estimates by nearly 2 million bales from last month – which includs a 1.25 million bale increase for China. World cotton crop for the season is also projected to be reduced by 900,000 bales, with a 3.5% increase in ending stocks.
