Generic pesticides in Brazil have fallen in price twice as far as those of proprietary products, according to the Brazilian generic agrochemical industry association, the AENDA. Both types of products suffered price falls between January 2006 and May 2008. The prices for generic products that have been approved under Brazil’s equivalence system fell by 32.4%, while prices for proprietary pesticides dropped by 15.7% on average, the AENDA says. It adds that the dollar fell against the Brazilian real by 27% over the period and concludes that competition has had a much larger effect on “equivalency-generic” products than on single supplier pesticides.
