AgroPages-Pesticide recycling depot to open in China -Agricultural news

China’s first pesticide waste recycling depot will open in Xianning, Hubei province, at the end of 2008. Construction of the depot is being overseen by the Hubei plant protection station as part of a Sino-German pesticide waste management project. The main storage area at the depot will occupy around 700 m2, and upon completion, will be responsible for recycling pesticide packaging and disposing of low- quality pesticides from five test areas in Hubei. The depot will mostly house fungicides and insecticides, some 80% of which will be of “mid-level or lower” toxicity, according to the town’s government. The depot has an investment of Yuan 2.3 million ($336,000). The Sino-German pesticide waste management project began in 2004 and is scheduled to run until 2009. However, both countries are expected to discuss extending the project to 2012 when they meet for talks in October.
