The Brazilian agrochemical market is “just a few years away” from being the world’s largest. That is the prediction of the agricultural market research group, Kleffman, Reuters reports. Volume sales will be the main component of growth rather than a declining US dollar. Brazil became the second largest market, overtaking Japan in 2003, according to our sister publication. Executives from Makhteshim-Agan Industries predicted the same after presenting the company’s second quarter results this month.
The Kleffman group says that US sales reached $6,500 million in 2007, which would have been a rise of 8% on the previous year’s $6,026 million. Sales rose by more than a third in Brazil in 2007 to top $5,300 million.
The US is a “mature market”, in which farmers already apply pesticides intensively, and has less available land for agricultural use, the research group says. Climate plays a role, according to Kelffman Brazil’s president, Lars Schobinger. There is a “much larger” range of diseases and pests to contend with in Brazil due to climatic conditions. “We [Brazilians] have a bigger challenge to control [pests and diseases],” he says. A significant consideration is what Kleffmann calls “the increasingly professional” profile of Brazilian farmers. Mr Schobinger notes several changes boosting the country’s pesticide market. They include: farmers applying insecticide as well fungicide treatments to soybean seeds; applying insecticides on soybeans earlier and more often since the practice of using fungicides to combat Asian soybean rust (Phakopsora pachyrhizi) started; and applying foliar fungicides on 20% of the maize area. The results include a 10% rise in soybean yields in the past three years and a 20% increase for out-of-season maize.
The Brazilian market rose by 15% in the first four months of this year.
