Chile disposed of or recycled 70.2 tonnes of empty pesticide packaging in the first half of 2008, CropLife Latin America says. Chile's agrochemical industry became a party to the "clean production accord" last year. It is a strategy to prevent damage to the environment and public health through the treatment and disposal of obsolete pesticides, and the collection and either recycling or disposal of empty packages. Government Ministries, pesticide distributors and producers, including the association, AFIPA, signed the accord. Some 68.2 tonnes of plastic and 2 tonnes of metal containers were dealt with in the first six months. The country has set up four new collection sites since the start of the year, and the AFIPA expects to collect 196 tonnes (180 tonnes of plastic, 16 tonnes of metal) for the whole year.
