EU authorities have recommended that Romania improve its testing for pesticide residues in food of plant origin. The European Commission's Food and Veterinary Office (FVO) has advised that effective co-ordination among authorities be ensured and that overlap of work be avoided. Three authorities, including the Ministry of Public Health, plan three independent annual sampling programmes, which leads to “some overlap”, the FVO says. The Office calls on the Ministry to provide training for residue inspectors and ensure that foreign authorities have access to appropriate laboratory capacity for analysis of residues in baby food.
The FVO further advises that all competent authorities ensure that laboratories have appropriate equipment and that those involved in the official control of residue analysis comply with EU regulations. Seven of 17 are accredited with limited scope, while it could not be established whether others fell under the derogation from accreditation, the Office says. The Office also wants a larger range of analytes covered in order to reflect the substances marketed and used. The Ministry has responded that it will not analyse food for general consumption this year, and that it will organise training for inspectors during 2008. ”In 2007, some 315 samples had been taken by [regional public health authorities], all of them complying with legal provisions,” it says. The FVO mission was carried out last March.
