The New Zealand Environmental Risk Management Authority (ERMA) is to reassess the registration of the fumigant, methyl bromide. The move has been prompted by a change in use patterns and the quantities being imported. Applications of methyl bromide other than for quarantine and pre-shipment (QPS) use and critical use exemptions (CUEs) have been banned in New Zealand, along with other developed nations, since January 1st 2005 under the Montreal Protocol. The only New Zealand CUE, for strawberries, ended in December 2007. However, imports of methyl bromide for QPS use have increased sharply in recent years, partly due to more timber treatment. The ERMA expects to undertake an 18-month investigation before inviting public submissions on the reassessment.
