Nippon Soda recorded agrochemical sales of ¥37,186 million ($349 million) in the year to March 31st 2008, up by 2.6% on the previous year. The company saw growth in the domestic and overseas markets. However, operating profit fell by 19.6% to ¥3,706 million ($35 million).
Growth in Japan was the result of higher sales of the new fruit and vegetable insecticide, Nisso Phoenix (flubendiamide). Nippon Soda started sales in 2007 of the product, which was co-developed by Nihon Nohyakuand Bayer CropScience. This offset lower sales of the established fungicide, Topsin-M (thiophanate-methyl), and the insecticide, Mospilan (acetamiprid).
Exports accounted for 51.2% of sales. Products contributing sales growth in overseas markets included the herbicide, Honest (tepraloxydim), Mospilan and the acaricide, Nissorun (hexythiazox). These products offset a decline in sales of the herbicide, Nabu (sethoxydim).
