The Brazilian authorities have set procedures for the re-evaluation of pesticide active ingredients. The Ministry of Health’s national health surveillance agency, the Anvisa, has passed Resolution RDC 48 (2008). It states that following the publication in the official national gazette, Diario Oficiao, of the ais that are to be analysed, companies would have 30 days to submit all toxicological studies on them. The next step would be a public comment period on the conclusions of their toxicological and regulatory aspects. Reassessment following the contributions would come via a commission, composed of members of the Anvisa and the Ministries of Agriculture and the Environment.
The work is necessary as a pesticide’s registration in Brazil is for an indefinite period, the Anvisa says. Substances that can cause acute poisoning of handlers or chronic diseases, such as cancer, according to international ratings, would have priority. Analysis may result, among other measures, in application restrictions, demand for improved worker safety or the banning of the pesticide.
