China to control crop damage by pest & diseases under 5% in 2012

It is predicted that in 2012 major crops such as rice, wheat and maize will suffer crop pest & disease caused by various pest & diseases as a result of abnormal climate and the changing farming methods; an accumulated 7.5 billion Mu-Times (1 Chinese Mu equals 667 m2) of crops in the whole year are foreseen to be affected, which will be 300 million Mu more year on year.
 
To ensure a well-balanced crop production and the due supply of major farm products, Chinese Ministry of Agriculture has set up the target to control the crop pest damage to major crops like wheat, rice and maize to be under 5%.
 
The Ministry of Agriculture will continue its initiative to implement the “specialized crop pest control & management program” in the 800 crop production zones, advantaged crop regions and areas of source of serious crop pest. 2012 will increase an additional 100 million Mu of crops for coverage by the “specialized crop pest control & management program” so as to reach the scheduled 18% coverage rate for major crops, which will be 3% up year on year.
 
In the meantime action will be taken to boost environment-friendly protection measures to facilitate horticultural production in a safe and healthy manner, targeting to achieve the scheduled 35% environment-friendly coverage rate for vegetable, fruit and tea plants, which will be 5% up year on year.
 
Furthermore, the Ministry of Agriculture will endeavor to enhance the crop pest & disease monitoring and warning system; make improvement to the national digital monitoring & warning platform against serious crop pest as well as to make sure that the short-term & medium-term crop pest forecast reaches above 90% accuracy.
