The Polish security service, the CBS, have seized counterfeit pesticides in a raid conducted near the town of Lubaczow, some 35 km from the Ukrainian border, reports the European Crop Protection Association (ECPA). They found fake pesticides carrying the labels of major pesticide suppliers operating in Poland and elsewhere in Europe.
The CBS were tracking a consignment of counterfeit pesticides reported to have been flown into Warsaw directly from China. They followed the consignment to Lubaczow where an additional two tonnes of counterfeit pesticide products were found. Of the 34 samples taken, at least 29 were confirmed as being fake.
The danger posed by the spurious products was accentuated by the fact that there were instances such as an insecticide being repackaged and relabelled as a herbicide. In another instance, a product had been over-labelled in Ukrainian, indicating that it was a glue product for the building industry.
The director of the Polish crop protection association, the PSOR, Michal Fogg, surmised that some products were being delivered directly from China for repackaging and distribution, while others were being smuggled over the border from Ukraine. He made his comments at a special enforcement workshop in Warsaw, where police officers, prosecutors, plant protection inspectors, border guards and road transport inspectors met to discuss the problem of counterfeit pesticides.
The PSOR will jointly host a conference with the ECPA in November in Poland, where enforcement officials from across Europe will meet to share experiences and develop strategies to combat counterfeit and illegal pesticides.
The ECPA launched a pan-European anti-counterfeit programme towards the end of 2006 and has been aggressively pursuing it in various European countries. In a similar incident last month, Russian police raided a pesticide counterfeiting facility near the city of Kursk.
