Mitsui & Co's agrochemical distribution company, Certis Europe, reported a 31% increase in turnover to €113 million ($176.1 million at current exchange rate) in the year ended March 31st 2008. First-time contribution from the acquisition of key horticultural products from the Dutch agrochemical company, Luxan (Elst), played a role in the impressive growth.
The addition of Luxan’s range of Gro-Stop (chlorpropham) plant growth regulators produced “excellent results” and strengthened Certis’ position in the “strategically important potato sector”. Luxan’s molluscicides also saw “record sales” in a “particularly wet summer in the UK”.
Additional growth was seen from the seed treatment fungicide, imazalil, with sales increasing in potatoes and cereals. Kumiai Chemical's fungicide, Valbon (benthiavalicarb), did well in what was “a very good year for potato blight fungicides in Belgium, Netherlands and the UK”.
The company says that Certis Spain has been able to influence and respond to an exceptionally high demand for beneficial insects over the last year. Since April 1st 2008, the UK-based Biological Crop Protection (Ashford) has been fully integrated into Certis Europe and rebranded BCP Certis. This change will allow Certis to take full advantage of the synergies between the two businesses in developing integrated pest management strategies for high-value crops, it says.
