Brazil has increased its volume imports of pesticides by almost a third in the first five months of this year compared to the same period in 2007, according to the Brazilian agrochemical industry trade union, the Sindag. Imports of all agrochemicals were up by 31.3% to 70,905 tonnes. The herbicide segment rose strongly and accounted for more than two-thirds of imports. The most imported active ingredient was glyphosate.
The second most import class was insecticides, accounting for 19.1% of imports at 13,539 tonnes. Imports of fungicides rose most sharply. They were up by half to 6,990 tonnes. Acaricides made up less than one percent of imports at 610 tonnes. The major crops that the imports were destined for use on were soybeans, maize and sugar cane, the Sindag says.
