Another 11 active ingredients in the third round of the EU review of existing ais are to be withdrawn, while a further five have been cleared for re-registration. Votes on the fate of the ais were taken by the EU Standing Committee on the Food Chain and Animal Health (SCFCAH) in May. The European Commission will formally adopt the decisions and either schedule phase-out periods or set dates for the addition of ais to Annex I of the EU agrochemical registration Directive (91/414).
The ais to be withdrawn include the insecticide, buprofezin. The decisions to withdraw the other ten ais were taken after they had gone through the faster evaluation process for ais designated "dark red" due to high risk or major data gaps. The ais are: the herbicides, butralin, cyanamide, dichlobenil, propachlor and propanil; the fungicides, dicloran, diniconazole, tricyclazole and triflumizole; the acaricide, dicofol; and the soil fumigant, methyl bromide, which is already being phased out as an ozone depleter.
The re-registered ais are the fungicides, fuberidazole, flutolanil and fluazinam, and the herbicide, benfluralin and the plant growth regulator, mepiquat chloride.
In addition, the SCFCAH voted for the withdrawal of two fourth-round review ais: the bio-insecticide, Beauveria brongniartii, and the fungicide/molluscide/biocide, potassium permanganate.
