BASF expects its “mid-term” eastern European annual agrochemical sales growth to outstrip analyst predictions for the region. BASFs numerous proprietary product launches in the region, including seven slated for 2008 - have driven the improved business. The company anticipates an increase in sales of 7-8% in eastern Europe, against the 4-5% that the crop protection market there is expected to grow. "BASF is one of three companies that invests heavily in crop protection research and development," said Michael Heinz, president of BASF Crop Protection division. BASF expects a boost from sales of new products in the region, including seven “innovative” products to be launched this year.
BASF is focusing on cereals, fruit and vegetables, sunflowers and oilseed rape. Cereals and oilseeds account for more than half (58%) of the region’s market, it says.
In 2008, BASF introduced its pipeline fungicide metrafenone in Central and South Eastern Europe. Developed for field crops as well as the fruits and vegetables, the product of new cereal fungicide Capalo (metrafenone + epoxiconazole + fenpropimorph) was launched as Vivando in Hungary, Slovenia, and Turkey. Capalo is among new formulations offering increased performance and a lower environmental impact, BASF says. The other two are Opera Max (pyraclostrobin + epoxiconazole) in Poland, and Swing Top (epoxiconazole + dimoxystrobin) in the Czech Republic.
BASF’s new insecticide Alverde (metaflumizone) offers broad-spectrum control in many specialty crops, including potatoes and different fruiting and leafy vegetables. It was launched in Romania this year, and registrations in other countries such as Hungary, Poland, and Turkey are expected next year.
The company has launched its fungicide, Vivando (metrafenone), this year in Hungary, Slovenia and Turkey. It was developed for field crops, fruit and vegetables and offers a new mode of action against powdery mildew (Uncinula necator) on grapevines. Metrafenone was first introduced in the UK on cereals in 2004.
The company has also launched its new insecticide, Alverde (Nihon Nohyaku’s metaflumizone) in Romania this year. It offers broad-spectrum control on specialty crops, such as potatoes, and fruiting and leafy vegetables. Alverde should be registered next year in Turkey, Hungary and Poland, BASF adds. Metaflumizone received its first global approvals in 2006 and 2007.
