US and Canadian authorities have agreed new procedures to allow continued trade in potatoes when faced with infestations of potato cyst nematodes (Globodera pallida). The revised export certification requirements include full field monitoring rather than perimeter sampling. All potato shipments must also include a declaration confirming that the seed potatoes originated from fields free of the pest. The revisions have been made to guidelines established in 2006 following the detections of G pallida in the US state of Idaho and G rostochiensis in the Canadian province of Quebec.
