Regulatory and market developments have opened up new opportunities for acaricides and nematicides in the US, according to two new reports from the US market research company, Kline & Co (Little Falls, New Jersey). "Until the last few years, a few specialised active ingredients, along with some broad-spectrum insecticides, were enough to meet market needs, and the potential market size did not justify new development," says Dennis Fugate, industry manager for Kline's specialty pesticide unit.

However, recent developments have improved the outlook for the acaricide and nematicide sectors, which are worth some $500 million annually at the manufacturer level, Kline points out. Regulatory pressures on the fumigant, methyl bromide, have prompted producers of high-value fruit and vegetables to seek new nematicide options. The acaricide sector has been boosted by resistance to propargite and by increased use of IPM strategies to preserve beneficial insects.
