Seed treatment technology is an important part of crop planting. With diverse demands and technological development, seed treatment products can load more and more functions and offer better protection to guarantee seed health and plant growth. Recently, AgroPages reported that Barenbrug do Brasil, a Brazilian subsidiary of the Royal Barenbrug Group, launched a new forage seed treatment product in Brazil, which attracted some readers' attention.

The new product launched by Barenbrug do Brasil combines Barenbrug’s exclusive Yellow Jacket® seed treatment technology and microbiological nematicide. The Yellow Jacket® technology, which uses fungicides, insecticides, nematicide, biostimulants and micronutrients, was developed to promote the fast and safe growth of forage in the field by protecting seedlings during initial development, making it possible to anticipate first grazing and, therefore, increasing the productivity of pasture area.

The inclusion of microbiological nematicide in the Yellow Jacket® technology brings more benefits to producers.  Plants from seeds treated with nematicide have lower nematode infection rates. When planting seeds treated with microbiological nematicide, an increase in the population of these microorganisms in the rhizosphere region of the roots of forage plants is expected.

The use of nematicide will also cause an increase in microbiological activity in that region and, therefore, there will be increased competition for space, the predation of eggs, and a reduction in the multiplication capacity of the nematode species, Pratylenchus brachyurus.

This, in treated crops, will not only control the nematode population but will also help the physical structure of the soil, due to the subsequent greater root volume within the soil profile. After drying, the forage will remain in place and will be subject to the decomposition process. This, in turn, favors soil fertility, helping to cycle important nutrients for crop production.

To find out more about the product's features and advantages, AgroPages interviewed Paulo Ramalho, Technology Development Coordinator, and Gustavo Aguiar, Marketing Coordinator at Barenbrug do Brasil.
Could you please inform us about Barenbrug's exclusive Yellow Jacket® seed treatment technology? What makes this technology superior to similar products in the market?

The Yellow Jacket® seed enhancement technology for Brachiaria and Panicum Species was launched in Brazil in 2017, with the main benefits of:

  a)  Safe establishment of forage plants in the field with extended protection against sucking and chewing insects, as well as some fungus species, which have negative effects on the shelf-life capacity of seeds. Such treatments include specific insecticides and fungicides.
  b)  Quick establishment of plants in the field. Higher production of green matter/dry matter of leaves and roots can be obtained through bio stimulants and micronutrients.
  c)  Easier and optimized sowing operation as the size and weight of every seed are homogeneous.

What are the benefits of using seeds treated with microbiological nematicide?

The increasing use of these forge species in rotation with agricultural crops, as well as intercropping with grain crops, created a specific market with its own and specific needs. Pratylenchus brachyurus is a phytonematode species that causes problems in crops roots and hosts itself in this species either. Therefore, the development of microbiological seed treatment aims to make forage roots a worse habitat for this nematode, which competes with the microorganisms contained in the seed treatment.

What is the impact of nematodes to grass seeds in Brazil? How about economic losses?

There is no specific data on losses to pastures, but some studies on soybeans, which is the main agricultural crop in Brazil, have shown a loss ranging from 60 to 1,680 kg/ha, with an average loss of 720 kg/ha or 21% of potential yield (EMBRAPA, 2015).

How big is the market for Yellow Jacket® seed treatment products?

There is a big opportunity for this technology in Brazil. Considering not only agricultural or integrated systems with livestock production, but also cattle production on pastures, we are seeing a growing market that urges greater safety, productivity and return on investment.
