On 10th September, 2019, the next generation patented herbicidal compound, 氟氯氨草酯(Fu Lv An Cao Zhi), developed by KingAgroot
, was officially named by the China Pesticide Technical Standardization Administration, marking progress in herbicide development from the stage of research to industrialization. It is also another major breakthrough achieved by KingAgroot, following the registrations of cypyrafluone, bipyrazone, tripyrasulfone and fenpyrazone, and is one of the six novel herbicidal compounds to be launched by the company over the next five years.
Nonselective herbicides are widely used on tillage land, no-tillage land and crop fields for controlling weeds, playing a key role in weed management. According to statistics, in 2016, the global sales of nonselective herbicides totaled some $8.7 billion, accounting for more than one-third of total herbicide sales at $22.74 billion, of which glyphosate
, paraquat and glufosinate accounted for $7.54 billion, according to Phillips McDougall.
Nonselective herbicides play an important part in agricultural production, but have also faced great challenges being reflected by the following:
1. The emerging problem of resistance
The occurrence of resistance to nonselective herbicides generally takes a long time to occur, but long-term repeated use will cause this resistance. As of 24th December, 2019, weed varieties comprising 31 species encompassing 71 biological types, as well as 47 species encompassing 317 biological types, and 4 species encompassing 7 biological types, are reported to be resistant to paraquat, glyphosate and glufosinate, respectively. For example, in China, the resistance of horseweed herb and goose grass to glyphosate has become a serious problem in orchards and vegetable crops.
2. The issue of safety
The most commonly used nonselective herbicide, glyphosate, is claimed to be carcinogenic. Several lawsuits in the United States were lost, its use is banned in the European Union, and its adverse effects are gradually being known around the world. Paraquat is the most toxic herbicide to mammals and is banned in many countries, including China. Moreover, existing nonselective herbicides are less effective and often require higher amounts per unit area of use, which may cause serious environmental damage.
3. Outdated varieties
Among nonselective herbicides, glyphosate, entered the market in 1974, with a history extending back to 45 years ago. Glufosinate, which was released more recently, has a history of 37 years. Long-term repeated use has caused the serious problem of resistance. The use of paraquat has been prohibited for a while now because of its high toxicity to mammals, but there is currently no available substitute.
Fu Lv An Cao Zhi is a next generation hormonemimic herbicide developed by KingAgroot, with its own intellectual property rights. The product has the following distinguishing features:
1. Broader and stabilized herbicidal spectrum
1) Excellent herbicidal effect against the majority of weeds, such as grass weeds, broad leaf and the sedge family. As well as the advantage of its hormonemimic herbicidal spectrum against broad-leaved and sedge weeds, Fu Lv An Cao Zhi also effectively controls most grassy weeds, such as eleusine indica, crab grass, barnyard grass, moleplant seed and green bristlegrass.
2) A good complement to glyphosate, paraquat and glufosinate, Fu Lv An Cao Zhi is effective in controlling glyphosate-resistant weeds, such as dayflower, cephalanoplos segetum, sonchus, field horsetail and convolvulus arvensis.
3) There is no cross resistance to glyphosate, paraquat and glufosinate.
2. Long-lasting control effect
Fu Lv An Cao Zhi has a certain residual activity that provides a long-lasting control effect. Its control duration is superior to glyphosate, paraquat, glufosinate and diquat, requiring fewer applications.
3. Good stability under low temperature
Fu Lv An Cao Zhi has better adaptability to temperature, enabling it to remain active and stable under low temperature conditions.
4. Fu Lv An Cao Zhi can be used on gene-edited and herbicide-resistant GM crop seeds
In the future,Fu Lv An Cao Zhi can be used on resistant crop seeds to become the third system following glyphosate-resistant and glyphosate-resistant American soybean, cotton and corn. The product can solve the increasingly prevalent problem of glyphosate and glufosinate resistance, significantly reducing the amount of herbicides used and improving crop productivity.
With the prohibition of paraquat and glyphosate while the problem of resistance is becoming more serious, Fu Lv An Cao Zhi, as a new-generation hormonemimic herbicide, is expected to become a novel solution of the global nonselective herbicide industry.
