To help wheat growers in the Northern Plains address irregular weather and changing pest threats, Syngenta is introducing three new spring wheat varieties bred to specifically address the region’s conditions.

The new AgriPro® brand wheat seed varieties include SY McCloud, SY Longmire and SY 611 CL2, and all three will be available to purchase as certified seed for the 2020 spring wheat planting season.

For growers in Minnesota, North Dakota and Montana looking to advance their economic return, SY McCloud is an exciting new variety that offers broad adaptability, high protein and yield potential, plus excellent test weight. SY McCloud is a well-rounded variety built similar to other high-performing AgriPro varieties SY Soren or SY Ingmar, continuing the AgriPro tradition of high-protein, high-return varieties.

Wheat stem sawfly is on the move across the region, with heavier-than-normal pressure seen into Minnesota. This small fly lays eggs within the hollow stems of wheat plants, resulting in stem lodging, harvest difficulty and yield loss. Growers who have been challenged by the growing sawfly threat can benefit from new solid-stem variety SY Longmire. Sawfly are unable to lay eggs in solid-stem varieties, making this variety an effective tool for those wheat growers experiencing wheat stem sawfly pressure in their fields. In addition to sawfly tolerance, SY Longmire also offers a strong disease package, excellent yield and higher protein potential than previous solid-stem varieties.

Invasive grass weeds like goatgrass, cheatgrass and Group 1 resistant wild oats can be particularly troublesome in spring wheat fields. SY 611 CL2, the third new offering in the spring wheat portfolio, is a step up for growers looking to diversify their weed management options without sacrificing yield potential. SY 611 CL2 is an herbicide-tolerant variety with high yield potential, very good protein and straw strength. Growers familiar with SY Soren will find SY 611 CL2 is a similar pedigree.

“The latest class of spring wheat varieties continue the tradition of high-quality AgriPro wheat varieties that set growers up for success,” said Corey Dathe, Syngenta key account lead for the Northern Plains region. “Every day, our team puts growers first when it comes to expanding our portfolio, ensuring each wheat variety developed is tailored to address local conditions and challenges growers face.”

Backed by more than 50 years of wheat breeding expertise, AgriPro wheat varieties are consistent top performers that offer best-in-class disease packages, leading agronomics and outstanding yields.
