One of the largest manufacturers of baculoviruses and pesticides, Australian-American AgBiTech, has entered into a trade agreement with the distributor Agro 100, in a bid to expand its business in southern Brazil.

The companies seek to treat two million hectares of crops with its line of lizards during the 2019-20 season.

Part of a group of 20 companies, with an annual turnover of approximately R $ 4 billion in agribusiness, Agro 100 was founded in 1996 in Londrina. In 2017 it received investment funding from the Aqua Capital fund. Agro 100 has annual sales of some R $ 1.6 billion, and employs 170 agronomists in 43 outlets covering 200 municipalities, from Paraná to the south of Mato Grosso do Sul.

Agro 100's CEO, agronomist Renato Seraphim, said that the commercial partnership with AgBiTech is anchored in the innovation proposed by the Australian-American company, as well as in the high growth potential of biological control within the farmer's pest management. “We look forward to helping the grower make more effective control of caterpillars and understand that the combination of chemical and biological technology will increase the profitability of the field,” noted  Seraphim.

The appearance of caterpillars at the beginning of planting, in areas of rain-scarce soybeans, may recur in the south of the country at some point. Therefore, Seraphim adds, through an innovation platform called Tech 100, Agro 100 conducts advanced studies involving the management of caterpillars by baculovirus in the agricultural environments where the distributor operates.

For Seraphim, the drop in resistance of Intacta or Bt soybeans, is another aspect that should contribute to the growth of the baculovirus market. “We have almost reached the limit of chemical knowledge. These require high research costs, and obtaining records takes time, particularly in Brazil. New solutions will come from genetics, nutrition and biological control,” he said. “We have no doubt that the baculovirus market will have significant and continual growth. Such products tend to be integrated into the producer's caterpillar management at once. ”

The BIP survey - Business Intelligence Panel - by consultancy Spark Strategic Intelligence, confirms the expectation of Seraphim. The study demonstrates that in soybeans the organic handled $ 100 million in the 2018-19 crop, up 45%. The area treated with soybean inputs increased to 7.8 million hectares, an increase of 152% over the previous cycle.

AgBiTech Brazil Commercial Director, Agronomist Marcelo Giuliano, points out that the agreement with Agro 100 adds value to the company's portfolio, formed by Armigen®, Cartugen®, Chrysogen®, Lepigen®, Surtivo® Soy, Surtivo® Plus, and Surtivo® Ultra.

“This partnership will certainly drive AgBiTech Brazil's business, while bringing innovation and new management practices to transfer more profitability to the Agro 100 customer,” said Adriano Vilas Boas, AgBiTech Latin America CEO.
