The Chilean government has updated a number of its phytosanitary regulations found in the Official Kiwi Bacteriosis Control Program (Pseudomonas syringae pv. Actinidiae - Psa). The new instructions are contained in resolution No. 7540/2019, which replaces the previous resolution and its modifications.

Among these modifications, the pesticides authorized for the control of Psa may be used until May 31, 2020. As of that date, parties must obtain an extension for use, with the incorporation of the control of this bacterium on labels in orchards and kiwi nurseries.

New regulations also call for the elimination of regulated areas and the declaration of plants for sale and their samplings. It also offers measures for the pollination of kiwi orchards.

This update responds to the analysis carried out jointly by the SAG (Agricultural and Livestock Service) and the industry, and includes measures that will apply to all kiwi orchards, packing plants, refrigerators or agribusiness process centers, propagation material, authorized laboratories for the sampling and diagnosis of the bacteria, and for research with Psa.

According to the Chilean government, modifications were necessary, given the epidemiological characteristics of Psa and the agroclimatic conditions of the country.

“Variable inoculum levels have been presented and their dispersion has increased over the years, determining their presence in samples from orchards located in various regions […..] which has generated a significant increase in the area under quarantine restrictions and has limited the identification of isolated orchards that can serve as a source of plant propagation material ”.
