China’s Prothioconazole capacity will increase to at least 8,000 tons by 2021

Global Market

Prothioconazole was developed by Bayer and launched in 2004. Now it is available in more than 60 countries globally. Prothioconazole has excellent control against almost all fungal diseases on cereals. In the 10 years after its launch, the market value of prothioconazole almost never stopped growing, and reached its historical peak in 2014, with global sales of $855 million.

Brazil is the largest market for prothioconazole, with sales of $284 million in 2016, followed by Canada ($102 million), France ($83 million), Germany ($706 million), the United Kingdom ( US$65 million), and the United States ($28 million).

Prothioconazole is most widely used in cereals, with sales of $371 million in 2016. This was followed by soybeans ($236 million); followed by rapeseed, cotton and corn.

China Production & Export

The Chinese patent of prothioconazole expired on November 8, 2015. At present, there are 2 manufacturers hold the ICAMA registration of prothioconazole TC, with current capacity of 1,000 tons/year. By the end of this year, it is expected to increase to 3,000 tons due to the addition of new capacity. At the same time, many other Chinese companies are also actively developing synthesis technology of this product. It is estimated that by 2021, the whole capacity in China will increase to at least 8,000 tons.

According to AGROPAGES’ data, since January 2019, the volume of prothioconazole products exported from China is 97 tons, valued at 4.92 million US dollars. The export varieties are concentrated in the 98% TC, 97.2% TC and 97% TC. Its market mainly includes Slovenia, Belgium, India, Uruguay, and Italy. Among them, South America is focused on formulations, while Europe mainly focused on TCs.

Future Opportunity

Prothioconazole is currently ranked third in the global fungicide market and is the largest cereals fungicide with very good growth prospects. In the past two years in China, the high control effect of prothioconazole on wheat scab and the inhibition of gibberellin have played an important role in the disease prevention and control.

Prothioconazole has a strong ability for mixing, and the current varieties which are in the field trials in China include enestroburin, tebuconazole, pyraclostrobin, iprodione, azoxystrobin, fluoxastrobin, and metalaxyl-M and so on. A rich mix and a reasonable rotation system can better reduce the risk of developing resistance, and its potential used for other crops and diseases will also be released.
