Chlorothalonil is a high efficient, low toxic and broad spectrum fungicide. Its action mechanism lies in the reaction with the glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase in the fungal cell where the cysteine-containing protein in the dehydrogenase is integrated to destruct enzyme activity, resulting in loss of vitality from the damage of metabolism of fungal cell. Therefore, it is very effective on control of fungi diseases, being widely used in agricultural production.
Chlorothalonil is applicable to various orchards and dry crops covering fruit trees, vegetable, wheat, soybean, potato and tobacco for control of rust diseases, anthracnose, powdery mildew, downy mildew, leaf spot and blight. Chlorothalonil is adhesive to crop surfaces, being long lasting and rain-wash resistant, which is very protective for crops. It is among the broadest and safest protective fungicide for crop protection applications. Chlorothalonil is a multi-action site compound, which does not easily cause cross resistance. It is an effective substitute for mancozeb and carbendazim. The global sales of chlorothalonil in 2016 reached $330 million.
