Improved vegetable varieties developed by Taiwan seed companies and trialed in Thailand can invigorate the seed industry in Southeast Asia.

Participants from WorldVeg, the Taiwan Seed Trade Association, and the Thailand Seed Trade Association met at the WorldVeg East and Southeast Asia Research and Training Station on the Kasetsart University (KU) campus, Kamphaeng Saen, Thailand on 21 February 2019 to view trials of Taiwan vegetable varieties under local conditions.

This cross-border cooperation initiative combines the research and development capacity of Taiwan with Thailand’s market access and energy to create new business opportunities for seed producers and farmers in both countries. The initiative is part of Taiwan’s Southbound Policy, which aims to foster greater engagement with countries in South and Southeast Asia.

The WorldVeg East and Southeast Asia crew were delighted to show the visitors the clearly labeled, well-maintained field demonstrations of tomato, cauliflower, peppers, and pumpkin. At the KU training center, visitors tasted the vegetables, took photos, and discussed business. The Ambassador of Taiwan to the Kingdom of Thailand joined the activities, and WorldVeg board chair and Director of the Taiwan Agricultural Research Institute, Dr. JJ Chen, was there as well.
