The inspectors of the Federal Service for Veterinary and Phytosanitary Surveillance have banned 75 tons of Moroccan tomatoes from entering Saint Petersburg. The press service of the Federal Service for Veterinary and Phytosanitary Surveillance reported the fact.

The cargo arrived at the big port of Saint Petersburg and live maggots of the South American tomato moth were found in the vegetables and the fact has been confirmed by the Leningrad inter-regional veterinary laboratory.

It is worth noting that the South American tomato moth is a very dangerous pest for vegetable crops, widely spread not only in South America but also in European and Mediterranean countries. The pest affects leaves, stems and tomato fruit. As the result, crop losses can reach 35-100%.
