Brazil: 'Webcide' operation fights illegal pesticide sale on the internetqrcode

The Public Ministry in Brazil launched a joint action in the states of Paraná and Rio Grande do Sul, with the goal of fighting the illegal sale of pesticides on the internet. Titled Webcide Operation, the actions constrained the online sale of pesticides without agronomic prescription, products were available to people that were not even farmers. 
 
A company located in the city of Curitiba was the target of a court order. According to the Public Ministry, it acts an intermediary who established online platform to expose and commercialize agrochemical products nationwide. 
 
“The inspection resulted in a decision that the company should close the online exposition and the commercialization of pesticides on its e-commerce platform, in addition to the seizure of documents,” said the Public Ministry in a statement. 
 
Another establishment of agricultural products that sold pesticides online nationally was the subject of diligence and inspection in the municipality of Paulo Bento, state of Rio Grande do Sul. This action was coordinated by the Support Center of Environment Defense of the Public Ministry of Rio Grande do Sul with the participation of the Department of Agriculture, Livestock, and Irrigation of Rio Grande do Sul (Seapi).
 
The Superintendent of the Brazilian Institute of Natural Environmental and Renewable Resources (Ibama) in the state of Paraná issued embargo terms against five companies, impeding the continuation of the illegal sale on the internet. In this case, the companies were informed about an infraction and fined R$136,000. 
 
In Curitiba, the operation was coordinated by the local justice department with the operational support of the police and the participation of national entities such as the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply, Ibama and the Agricultural Defense Agency of Paraná (Adapar).
