Agrochemical use increases to 3.8MMT in 2017 in Argentina

According to IES Consultants, the consumption of agrochemicals in Argentina was increased to 3.8 million metric tons (MMT) in 2017, compared with the 3.6MMT in the previous years. The report highlighted that 69.5% products were imported.

The debates on the use of pesticides and the ban on glyphosate have not affected their use. According to the consultancy, in the last 25 years, there was considerable growth in the use of agrochemicals due to agricultural expansion and the increase in production.

Alejandro Ovando, director of the consultancy, noted the prospects were positive for the pesticides and fertilizers sector, as a response to the improvement in the economic scenario of the agricultural sector, following the elimination of export taxes and reduction in the export taxes on soybean.

According to the report, in 2017, the foreign trade in pesticides and fertilizers showed a reduction in the value and volumes sold. With respect to the quantities, nearly 256,000 tons were sold, a 27.9% drop compared with the 355,000 tons in 2016, interrupting a growth observed since 2014.

The export destinations, in terms of value, last year were concentrated in South America: Brazil led with 32.7%, followed by Paraguay with 24.15%, Bolivia with 12.5%, Uruguay with 11.3%, and Chile with 9.6%.

The import value of agrochemicals reached US$1.85 billion, a 1.5% increase over the $1.82 billion registered in 2016. “The increase responded to a rise of 30.7% in the external purchases of herbicides, based on the reduction of glyphosate purchases, to reach $400 million, and a fall of 5.5% in the total nitrogen fertilizers for $729 million, which combined had a participation of 39.5% of the imports,” the consultants stressed.

Regarding the quantities imported, the total was 2.6 million tons, 6.7% below the 2.8 million tons registered in 2016. China was the leader in imports with 29.8% of the market share, followed by the United States with 24.1%. Brazil held the third position with 7.5%, while Russia has the fourth position with 6.2%.
