Dow's rice herbicide Loyant receives US registration

"A single product that controls multiple species of grasses, broadleaves and sedges will change the way we consult and farm rice in the Midsouth," says rice consultant Ashley Peters at the 2017 Cotton and Rice Conference.
Loyant herbicide with Rinskor active is now registered by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. The new herbicide from Dow AgroSciences brings to the rice market a new active ingredient with unrivaled broad-spectrum control that also will combat herbicide resistance.
"Weed competition has become more complex as spectrums broaden and herbicide chemistries become overly relied upon," says Hunter Perry, Dow AgroSciences field scientist.
"Loyant herbicide offers new answers to recurring problems through a different class of chemistry that increases the spectrum of control and tackles resistant weeds."
Advanced weed management
This new, flexible, broad-performance herbicide will help rice growers optimize their yield. Loyant meets the unique needs of today's growers by providing:
- the base of a herbicide program to build weed management on
- unmatched broadleaf, grass, sedge and aquatic weed control
- control of ALS-, ACCase-, glyphosate-, propanil- and quinclorac-resistant weeds such as barnyardgrass and sedges
On-farm trials
Arkansas rice producers Hunter and Drew Carter participated in the Dow AgroSciences Field Forward program, which offered an opportunity to try Loyant herbicide before it was commercially available.
They deal with high populations of resistant barnyardgrass and sedges and a multitude of weed species.
"You name it, and we've sprayed it," Hunter Carter says. "We have such high levels of resistance, that I know the result of untreated weeds, and that's crop failure."
Hunter Carter says Loyant herbicide provided "excellent" control of a broad spectrum of weed species.
"It worked wonderfully," he says. "It provided us complete control of the barnyardgrass and sedges that were present in the field.
"We can control the resistant grasses, but we have to use three different chemicals," he says. "With Loyant, we only need one."
