Costa Rica has succeed in reducing the quantity of agrochemicals used in agricultural activities, from 10.7 kilograms active ingredients per hectare in 2015 to 9.6 kilograms per hectare in 2016, according to a report released by the Phytosanitary Service of the State (SFE).

The report highlighted that the reduction is even larger, if compared to data from seven years ago in 2010, when the quantity of kilograms of active ingredient was some 13.9 kilograms per hectare. Between 2010 and 2016, there was a reduction of 4.3 kilograms per hectare.

The SFE website indicates that total volume of active ingredients used in Costa Rica was 11.5 million kilograms in 2010, compared to the 8.9 million kilograms in 2016, a decrease of 23%.

The agency, a part of the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock, is responsible for publishing data of the estimated use of pesticides per hectare in the country. It is also charged with ensuring the correct and adequate use of these products, whose purpose is the control of plagues and diseases on agricultural crops.

SFE stated in a press release that in the last seven years there were over ¢300 million invested in education campaigns focused on proper agricultural practices. Further, the goal of these campaigns is to train farmers in the correct use of agrochemicals, such as pesticides, herbicides, nematicides and other products, in controlling plagues and diseases, and nutritional needs of crops and soils. According to SFE, there is a parallel training by producers, in a bid to assure a continuous and sustainable effort to reach farmers and teach them the proper use of agrochemicals.
