Stand 641 Centre stage on the Elsoms’ stand at Cereals 2017 (14th/15th June, Lincs, UK) will be winter wheat and oilseed rape (OSR) varieties that combine exceptional disease resistance with AHDB Recommended List (RL)-topping yields.

Working in partnership with Saaten Union, a leading German breeder, Elsoms is an emerging leader in the development of new agricultural varieties for UK farmers, with four new Group 4 winter wheat varieties on the latest AHDB RLs: Dunston, Moulton, Freiston, and Bennington. All four are robust, high yielding, low-risk varieties. Elgar offers a similarly valuable package of benefits to OSR growers. Elsoms will also be showcasing an extensive range of energy crops, focusing on hybrid rye, and hybrid wheats from Saaten Union. Visit stand 641 to discuss any aspect of the agricultural crop portfolio with experts from both companies.

“Our recent success with winter wheat is clear evidence that Elsoms’ strategy of transforming the agricultural seed business through investment and co-operation with strong partners across Europe is delivering for UK growers,” said Adrian Hayler, Head of Elsoms Agricultural Division. “We have an exciting and growing portfolio of arable seeds and we look forward to discussing their merits with visitors to Cereals 2017. While the winter wheats are deservedly enjoying the spotlight, we also have excellent high yielding, clean hybrid rye varieties for those growing for anaerobic digestion, and rigorous hybrid wheats for the profitable cultivation of marginal sites.”

Elsoms now has a substantial number of cereals and oilseed varieties on the latest AHDB Recommended Lists with many leading their group on the basis of yield and/or agronomic merit. Breeding for disease resistance is a key focus and results in robust varieties that maintain profitability when the crop comes under pressure. For example, Elgar, which tops the AHDB E/W RL for OSR in terms of gross yield, also offers good all- round disease resistance, including a rating of 7 for light leaf spot.

The scale of the UK energy crop sector continues to increase steadily and though maize is the foundation of many rotations a range of other crops such as can be hybrid rye, triticale and energy beet can be beneficially included. Hybrid rye, in particular, is growing in popularity because it combines beneficial anaerobic digestion performance with substantial agronomic merit. Suitable for any location in the UK, it offers good synergy with maize in the digester and has the added advantage of supporting black grass management.

“Whatever your agricultural seed requirements, we’re sure to have something of interest,” concludes Adrian Hayler, “and if you haven’t looked at the Elsoms offering for a couple of years then you may be surprised by how much has changed. Why not drop by the stand for all the latest information and an excellent coffee!”
