Recently, the Chinese Ministry of Agriculture issued market data for key vegetables, including tomato, chili, potato and ginger. AgroPages presents an analysis of the 2016 market and a forecast for 2017 on how many pesticides have been registered for these crops.

Tomato

China’s tomato planting area in 2016 was about 16.48 million Mu, up 2.7 percent year-on-year. The total output was 56.86 million tons, 1.6 percent up year-on-year. The main reason for the continued growth was that the market price of tomato stayed strong and farmers remained positive towards planting of tomato.

The planting area for tomato in 2017 is expected to be around 16.27 million Mu, or down 1.3 percent year-on-year. The main reason for the slight drop in planting area is that some provinces experienced difficulty in selling during 2016, such as Henan, Inner Mongolia, Liaoning and Jilin, directly impacting farmers’ tomato planting initiative.

With regards to exports, tomato is one of China’s most important superior farm products for export, where China’s annual export of tomato sauce accounts for about a third of the world’s total trade volume. The major destination of export covers neighboring countries like Russia, Vietnam, Kazakhstan and Mongolia. China’s export of tomato product in 2016 was reduced a little bit to 1.18 million tons, up 0.2 percent year-on-year. The amount of exports was $880 million, down 12.7 percent year-on-year. The main reasons were that cost of production and processing going up, production capacity exceeded demand and import countries imposed technical barriers to trade.

The export of tomato product in 2017 is expected to be around 1.2 million tons, up 0.8 percent year-on-year. However, export of processed tomato may still stay low or even decline further.

According to AgroPages’ China Pesticide Registration Watch, there are 70 insecticide products, 1006 fungicide products, and six herbicide products registered for use in tomato in China.

Chili

Due to the weather impact, China’s chili planting area in 2016 was pegged at about 23.20 million Mu, which remained stable with a slight declination over the previous year. The total output was 31.33 million tons, down 10.4 percent year-on-year. The planting area of chili in 2017 is expected to increase up to 23.90 million Mu, up 3 percent year on year. The main reasons for the expected increase are 1) chili market appeared to be good this year and farmers in general intend to expand planting in the coming year; 2) profitability of planting chili is higher than planting other vegetables.

With regards to export, China is a prime chili export country, ranked No.1 in the world for many years. The major destination of export covers Korea, Japan, Mexico, Australia, United States and Southeast Asian countries. stimulated by international demand, China’s chili export volume in 2016 was 260,000 tons worth $496 million, respectively up 42 percent and 46.8 percent year-on-year, which were both substantial increases. Chili exports in 2017 are expected to increase up to 320,000 tons, up 15 percent year-on-year.

According to AgroPages’ China Pesticide Registration Watch, there are 56 insecticide products, 206 fungicide products, and two herbicide products registered for used in chili in China.

Potato

China’s potato production generally remained stable in 2016. Potato was planted nation-wide, but per-unit yield decreased due to weather impact. The total output was about 92.01 million tons, down 3 percent from a year ago. With China’s accelerated agricultural supply-side structural adjustment process in 2017, the planting of corn in the Liandaowan Region is expected to be switched continually to the planting of potato. Thus, the planting area for potato in 2017 is expected to reach 86.96 million Mu, and total output will reach a record high of 96.82 million tons, up respectively at 2 percent and 5.2 percent year on year.

With regards to export, China’s potato export volume in 2016 was reduced to certain extent due to higher price in domestic market, while the amount of exports remained almost the same as the previous year. China’s total potato export volume was 396,000 tons, down 4.3 percent year on year, at $238 million, up 0.6 percent up year on year. With intensified trade development with surrounding countries, particularly following the Belt and Road Initiative of central government, China’s potato export in 2017 is expected to grow steadily and will resume to the annual volume of 600,000 tons, up 20 percent year on year.

According to AgroPages’ China Pesticide Registration Watch, there are 21 insecticide products, 155 fungicide products, and 45 herbicide products registered for used in potato in China.

Ginger

China’s ginger production remained stable in 2016. Relevant data showed that the ginger planting area continued to grow, having reached 3.49 million Mu, up 8 percent year on year. The total output reached 9.38 million tons, up 2.6 percent year on year. With the continued increase in earnings, the planting area for ginger in 2017 is expected to increase slightly, which may reach 3.83 million Mu. Total output is expected to reach 10.87 million tons, up 16 percent year on year, if there is no significant impact from weather and pest disease damage.

In terms of exports, China is an important ginger exporting country covering the Middle East, Southeast Asia, United States, Japan and Korea. According to Chinese Customs data, China’s total ginger export volume in 2016 reached 542,600 tons, which was 127,300 tons more than 2015, up 33 percent year on year.

Ginger prices in the domestic market are somewhat correlated to export volume and price, but the export volume in 2016 increased and export prices did not rise. On the one side, export volume accounted for only 3 percent of China’s total production volume, which is very low. On the other hand, import countries from international market are mostly developing countries that are not demanding high quality at a high price, therefore the strength to raise domestic price as driven by imports is quite limited. As the domestic price is expected to decline in 2017, the growth of exports may continue.

According to AgroPages’ China Pesticide Registration Watch, there are three insecticide products, eight fungicide products, and 17 herbicide products registered for used in ginger in China.
