Brazil’s National Health Surveillance Agency (Anvisa) has approved a microbiological nematicide, based on the active ingredient Bacillus licheniformis strain Cepa DSM 32154 (FMCH001).

The announcement was made through the resolution RE No. 160 of January 20 and was published in the Official Union Gazette on January 23.

According to the monograph, the authorized formulation uses powder for the preparation of paste in water and the modality is a terrestrial application that uses spraying or drenching and seed treatment. According to Anvisa, there is no need to stipulate maximum limit of residue and safety interval for this active ingredient.

The toxicological classification was not determined for the active ingredient. The agency said this type of categorization for formulated products with micro-organisms is determined based on studies involving a commercial product.

Anvisa clarified that the approval of biological targets is the responsibility of the Ministry of Agriculture Livestock and Supply. For information on biological targets with approved use for this active ingredient, see the website of the Ministry of Agriculture (http://www.agricultura.gov.br).

The maker of the pesticide FMC used Bacillus licheniformis for the composition of the nematicide Quartzo (Bacillus subtilis + Bacillus licheniformis).
