The 27th Rice Harvest event will officially open at the Rio Grande do Sul Arborists Association (Federarroz) at the Experimental Station of the Riograndense Rice Institute (Irga), in Cachoeirinha/LOL, on February 16-18, 2017.

The event is supported by the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply, through Embrapa.

On the first day of the event, the research unit from Pelotas, RS, to Embrapa Clima Temperado will officially launch BRS A701CL, an irrigated rice cultivar, and BRS Pampa CL. Both have been developed for the ClearField system.

The irrigated rice cultivar BRS A701CL will be officially launched and presentation for BRS Pampa CL will be made on February 16 at 6:15 pm in the main auditorium of the Irga Station. Managing rice crops with the aid of the Clearfield® Production System makes it possible to effectively control red rice, the main weed in case of the rice crop worldwide.

The cultivar, a result of Embrapa's breeding program, was obtained through backcrossing between commercial cultivar BRS 7 Taim and cultivar Cypress CL, which is a source of herbicide resistance to the chemical group of imidazolinones.

The cultivar BRS A701 CL was developed with the objective of combining good agronomic characteristics of the cultivar BRS 7 Taim with the resistance to the broad spectrum herbicide Kifix ® of the group of imidazolinones, characteristic of the cultivar Cypress CL.

BRS A701 CL presents a medium cycle, about 130 days from emergence to full maturation, high productivity potential, reaching 8.6 tons/ha. It has resistance to lodging and degrane, and moderate tolerance to iron toxicity. It is considered a modern plant, with smooth and erect leaves, low size. It is recommended for quality cooking, since the grains are of “needle” type.

According to the researcher, Ariano Magalhães Júnior, this new cultivar meets the demand of the productive sector, replacing the cultivar BRS Sinuelo CL, which presented first-generation tolerance to the herbicide Only®, but was not tolerant to Kifix®.

Seeds of this cultivar can be purchased from producers licensed by the Business Office of Capão do Leão/Embrapa Produtos e Mercado (http://spm.embrapa.br/escritorios/capaoleao/historico/).

The second cultivar targeted for the Clearfield production system, BRS Pampa CL, will be presented to the public and possibly launched in 2018.

It has characteristics similar to BRS Pampa, but additionally, it can adapt to the Clearfield system, which avoids the appearance of rice red. It remains productive and with excellent grain quality.

In 2016, only BRS Pampa conquered a duplicate number of users who cultivated it in the rice fields of Rio Grande do Sul, compared to 2015. The expectation is that the area of adoption will increase by 15 to 20 percent over the next five years. With the presentation of this cultivar with a genetic addition of the Clearfield system, this increase could be much more, beating even the expectations of the researchers.
