The Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation (Embrapa) and the Southern Research Support Foundation (Meridional) launched the BRS 413RR, a new soybean cultivar, at the Rural Show 2017 in Cascavel.

The new soybean cultivar brings together characteristics such as a high productivity potential, good sanity and precocity.

This cultivar combines good yields with differentiated sanity, being resistant to the main diseases of soybean such as stem cancer, frog eye spot, powdery mildew and brown stem rot.

Another differential of the BRS 413RR is the precocity. The new cultivar belongs to a group of relative maturity 6.2, varying from 101 to 139 days of total cycle, depending on the region and time of sowing.

According to researchers, this characteristic is important because it allows the planting of the second corn crop in regions where this crop can be viable.

Earlier harvesting may also help in the control of stink bugs and diseases such as soybean rust as it reduces the exposure time of the crop to such problems in the field. The cultivar also has narrower leaves, good branching and lodging resistance, all characteristics that make it suitable.

The BRS 413RR is indicated for cultivation in a large adaptation area such as Santa Catarina (REC 103 and 102), Paraná (REC102, 103, 201 and 202), São Paulo (REC 203 and 103) and Mato Grosso do Sul (REC 204 and 202).

“It is important to emphasize that, despite the indication about its wide adaptability,  the improvement trials indicate that the BRS 413RR presents greater productive potential in regions above 500 m, with wide a seeding window,” explained EMBRAPA’s researchers. It was so because in areas below 500 m, this cultivar will be more competitively sowed in high fertility soils. It can be sown after October 5.

With the expansion of the soybean area with Intacta (Bt) technology in Brazil, the producer was facing a lack of good cultivar options for use in the refuge areas.

For every 80 ha of Bt soybeans, for example, the farmer needs to plant at least another 20 ha with non-Bt soybeans, which is the area of refuge. In this area, the producer can use conventional (non-transgenic) soybeans or any transgenic soybeans that do not have Bt technology.

The BRS 413RR rightly fills this gap by offering seeds for the areas of refuge.

In the case of the Intacta cultivars of Embrapa exhibited in the Rural Show 2017 (BRS 1001IPRO, BRS 1003IPRO, BRS 1007IPRO and BRS 1010IPRO), the BRS 413RR presents itself as a great refuge option.

"It is important to note that the early BRS 413RR is similar to the cycle of most of the Intacta cultivars that are in the market, making it a desirable factor for using it as a refuge," researchers said.
