The capacity of Coromandel International Ltd's fertiliser unit here is being expanded from 700 tonnes per day to a 1,000 tonnes per day and a public hearing for the purpose would be held in the factory premises at Sriharipuram on Thursday.

A company spokesman said here on Wednesday phosphoric acid was being produced at the unit here and it would cost the company Rs. 225 crore more to increase the capacity. "We have all the infrastructure and there is no need for any additional land acquisition. The environmental impact assessment study was conducted by an expert agency named by the Ministry of Environment and Forests," he said.

He said the capacity of the existing effluent treatment plant would be sufficient and there would not be "any additional environmental impact." The company would take all measures to adhere to the emission parameters and discharge standards set by the AP Pollution Control Board and the Central Pollution Control Board. These facts would be explained at the public hearing on Thursday to allay any apprehensions.

The capacity expansion would generate additional jobs for 275 persons directly or indirectly.

He said Coromandel had spent Rs. 3.1 crore on various corporate social responsibility activities in the vicinity of the plant during the past five years. A total of Rs. 26 crore would be spent on environment management activities as part of the expansion project.

He said Coromandel International of the Murugappa group caters to 70 per cent of the farming needs of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana and "after demonetisation, fertiliser offtake had gone down drastically in both the Telugu states during the rabi season. We are waiting for the situation to improve."

He said the Centre had suggested that the fertiliser companies should provide fertilisers to farmers on credit. "We are willing to do that provided the Government disburses fertiliser subsidy arrears due to us. The Government has to release Coromandel Rs. 1,200 crore in subsidy," he added.
