In Rio Grande do Sul in Brazil, the largest canola producer in the country, the harvest is almost complete. The increase in the planted area of canola was accompanied by a rise in the productivity of the crops, favored by the climatic conditions of the winter.

According to data published on November 2016 by Companhia Nacional de Abastecimento (CONAB), canola showed a 7% increase in planted area compared to last year, registering more than 47,000 ha in Brazil. The average productivity should also be 30% higher, which is over 1,600 kilograms per hectare (kg/ha). It is estimated that the total production of grains reached 75,000 tons, an increase of 36.6%.

According to Paulo Ernani Ferreira, analyst from Technology Transfer Department of Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation (Embrapa) Wheat, canola has gained prominence among winter crops, both as an alternative for crop rotation and for income generation. Paulo said canola has presented steady growth in the last three years, with variable yields depending on the climatic conditions and the experience of the producer. The average productivity, which was 812 kg/ha in 2014, rose to 1,236kg/ha in 2015 and 1,576kg/ha in 2016, respectively.

In 2015, canola was grown in eight Brazilian states (RS, PR, MS, MG, GO, SC, SP and MT). In 2016, canola was planted in five states (RS, PR, MG, SC and MT) but with an increase in area, especially in Rio Grande do Sul.

"Canola is still seen as an alternative in crop rotation, often yielding space for cereals such as maize and oats. But finally producers have achieved good yields and realized the benefits of canola for crops in subsequent years, gradually increasing the area of cultivation,” Gilberto Tomm, researcher of Embrapa Wheat, said.

In this harvest, the climate favored canola in RS, with several producers' incomes reaching close to 2,400 kg/ha. Isolated losses were recorded in later crops, especially in the northwest region of the state, due to heavy rains that caused threshing of crops ready for harvest. In Paraná, there was a reduction in the cultivated area by 20% compared to 2015, due to the high price of the corn, and canola suffered losses due to frosts in the flowering, nevertheless closing the harvest with an average of 1,400 kg/ha.

In the CONAB evaluation, the results of this harvest should stimulate producers to invest even more in the crop, placing canola next to oats as winter crop of better result to the producer. Prices remain attractive, ranging from R$ 66 to R$ 68 per bag of 60kg.
