The Brazilian market of biopesticides has registered a strong growth in the last few years. The annual growth of the biopesticides market in the world is around 10%, and this year it may reach US$ 3 billion, a value that represents 5% of the total crop protection market. In Brazil, there is a perspective of an annual expansion of 15% for the next years. Currently, the Brazilian market of pesticides in general is around US$ 9.6 billion, while biopesticides account for 2% of this total.

The data was analyzed by lecturers and participants of Biocontrol Latam 2016 – Conference & Exhibition, an event held in Campinas, state of São Paulo. “The expansion of biological pesticides is a trend without comeback in Brazil and around the world,” affirmed Pedro Faria Jr, president of ABC Bio – Association of Brazilian Companies of Biological Control, which gave organizational support for the event held for the first time in Latin America.

“We understand that biological pesticides are consolidated as main options for producers to combat plagues and diseases due to the deficiencies resulting from the exclusive use of the chemicals, which have been used for over 50 years but not reached the same effectiveness,” Faria Jr commented.

The president of ABC Bio said in an interview that the biopesticide is a trustful and fundamental option to the country, which showed an annual production from 50 million metric tons to 200 million metric tons in 30 years. “Another proof indicating the good potential of Brazil is almost all big agrochemical companies have already acted in the country with biological products,” he added.

The evaluation of ABC Bio president is confirmed by the presentation made by Fábio Brandi, responsible for the biological area of Bayer in Brazil. He said that Bayer has invested in the segment since 2009, acquired several companies in this field, has a bank of approximately 100,000 genes of micro-organisms on study and development and has already been integrated as the fourth pillar of the business of the company, which is formed by Seeds, Agrochemicals and Services.

“Through this strategy, Bayer considers the demand of farmers, who not only want more productivity and yields but also lower toxicity of food," commented Brandi.
