Seed suppliers, who are members of the Federation of Agricultural Input Distributors of Argentina, have requested for an intensified debate on the modification of the Seed Law in the country “to contemplate the needs of all chain players.”

According to a statement from the Federation, the seed suppliers' needs are not contemplated in the government project on modification of the Seed Law or in other projects being discussed in the country’s Congress.

Speaking on the issue, Pablo Martin Maña of Bertone Semillas company said, “The suppliers are going to present their stance at the agriculture Commission of the House of Representatives.”

"It is indispensable that the new law defines a limit to restrict the right for personal use and to allow the possibility of reserving and using seeds in the following seasons, which would help in generating greater quantities in a legal way. This restriction would affect considerably the profitability of the growing industry and would encourage illegal practice of 'white bag',” he added.

Corroborating with this argument, Hugo Previgliano, manager of the business unit of the company GEAR, requested for the law to protect the suppliers. “We have acquired the original material from the seed breeder and created a contract that contemplates a rule to enjoy the original seeds with the registration according to government resolutions and our fiscal obligations. Therefore, we believe that the monitored seed production, in this type of establishment, should not only be protected but promoted by the new Seed Law to bring more predictability for the sector and guarantee the production volumes and quality,” he said.

Marcelo Senatore, president of the Federation, called for an advance of the discussion of the law in the Congress during the “current legislative period or under an extraordinary session, in order to avoid a delay in its implementation.”
