Nigeria earmarked $10.3 M for crop protection

As part of measures to intensify crop protection for enhanced food security, the Nigerian government earmarked US $10.3 million to control pests this year in parts of the country prone to attacks by quelea birds, weaver birds and grasshoppers.

The government said the exercise which has become an annual ritual involves aerial spray of about 228,000 metric tons of pesticides as well as ground monitoring using motorized and manual sprayers for effective control.

Nigeria could reap a bumper harvest this year as a result of adequate rainfall and the measures put in place to curtail the activities of migratory pests, which account for about 40 percent of post harvest loss.
