In less than two years ResponsibleAg has enrolled more than 2,100 facilities and recently completed its 1,000th audit. Yara’s West Sacramento Terminal earned the distinction by submitting its assessment results August 29.

“Yara places a high importance on compliance and safety throughout our activities, and our association with ResponsibleAg has supported us in this effort,” said Jørgen C. Arentz Rostrup, President of Yara North America, Inc. “We have a responsibility to the industry and to our communities to be safe and secure, and we encourage the entire industry to continue to share these goals and to work along the principles of ResponsibleAg.”

ResponsibleAg was formed by the fertilizer industry in 2014 to promote public welfare by assisting agribusinesses in complying with federal environmental, health, safety and security rules regarding the safe handling and storage of fertilizer products.

The organization provides participating retail agribusinesses a federal regulatory compliance assessment relating to the safe storage and handling of fertilizers, recommendations for corrective action where needed, and a robust suite of resources to assist with compliance.

The assessment checklist, developed by a technical committee comprised of industry regulatory and safety professionals, contains more than 320 questions. Auditors credentialed under the ResponsibleAg Certification Program use the checklist to assess compliance with federal regulations at participating facilities.

“Fertilizer retailers, distributors and suppliers have stepped up to the plate to show — as an industry — how committed we are to employee and community safety and security,” said J. Billy Pirkle, Chairman of the ResponsibleAg Board of Directors. “This is a significant milestone for the organization, but we still have more work to do.”

About ResponsibleAg

ResponsibleAg is an independent, not-for-profit organization designed to support fertilizer retailers’ compliance with federal safety and security regulations. The fertilizer industry is welcoming the new organization and hopes to continue to build on ways to enhance the safety and security of everyone involved in the fertilizer supply chain.

The goals of ResponsibleAg are to improve safety and security associated with the storage and handling of fertilizer products, support compliance with federal laws and regulations, and ensure the safety of employees, customers and communities, while serving the need for crop nutrients.

Under ResponsibleAg, retail fertilizer dealerships will have access to comprehensive inspections based on federal regulatory requirements. The inspections will be carried out by trained auditors who will have successfully completed an intensive training course based on the objectives of ResponsibleAg.

ResponsibleAg audits will include federal regulations pertaining to fertilizer storage and handling, with an initial emphasis on ammonium nitrate (AN) and anhydrous ammonia (NH3), but will include the federal requirements for all fertilizer products. Every facility will be assessed every three years by a ResponsibleAg auditor, and to ensure a high level of reliability, a statistically valid sample of all facilities will receive random verification from an independent auditor every year.
